i App Cryptic Crossword S0072 by Knut

April 23, 2023

Difficulty rating (out of five): ⏳⏳⏳

You won’t be surprised to learn that this was originally published on 2d, where it perhaps made a little more sense. Quirky, certainly, and sometimes obscure, but never dull, this was Knut being, well, Knut… Crossing that espionage writer with the horny Greek vessel was a little naughty, as both were less than obvious, but elsewhere there was always a way through, even if you couldn’t always parse everything.

Talking of parsing, that of 25d on Fifteensquared must surely be wrong – the band in question consist of more members than the rowing brothers, so it should be an &Lit, they being regularly seen in the band? Virtually, too, it should be noted now thanks to the dubious wonders of AI.

I suspect this will be one of the better offerings on display this morning in the cryptic world, so do give it a go.

CoD? I’ll go with 9ac – “When 2’s caught dropping ecstasy in front of the stage (5)”.

All the answers and parsing of the clues can be found in Fifteensquared’s blog from the aforementioned date:

Unable to do much this morning having put my back out yesterday, so Sunday crossword it is. ⏳⏳⏳ for time here and mostly good fun, but I was completely baffled by the wordplay for SINGLE OUT, SOAP OPERA and the STFU bit of LUSTFUL (hmmm… should’ve got that one). In the end had to cheat to get ‘HOSEL’, never ‘eard of it.

On the plus side I was chuffed to get 1a so early (it was only my second in after 1d), it certainly helped with the down clues.

A good day to start in the bottom half, which was brilliant and not too hard, but for someone like me who’s not really heard of Chapman Pincher (rang only the most distant of bells) that NE corner was well into 5* for difficulty. I eventually pieced the writer together from the wordplay though, which then helped to limp over the line with the fiendish HOSEL and RHYTON.
Loved the clue for FARTHING – brilliantly disguised definition and a hint at East Fife 4, Forfar 5.

Just read about the ghost theme: PENNY FARTHING, DREADFUL, ARCADE, ROYAL, PINCHER, and even PENNY SHARE apparently. There may be more!
