i Cryptic Crossword 3582 Peter

August 1, 2022

Difficulty rating (out of five): 🌟

The week starts with a gentle and accessible crossword from Peter. This was an enjoyable and pleasing solve, completed in well under par, and with no need to get the dictionary down off the shelf.

Even the plant came to mind readily. I do have a bit of a blind spot where crosswords and botany overlap in the great Venn diagram of life, but recalling CND, once considerably more high-profile than they seem to be nowadays, the entry very quickly suggested itself. I suppose TALENT from “money” is less obvious than it may have been in times past, but still eminently gettable with the helpful crossing letters.

Only once did my eyebrows rise, on noting the archaic spelling of what is these days rendered as rhyme. “Really?” I muttered, but Madame La Saboteuse pointed out that it seemed to be good enough for Coleridge and his Ancient Mariner, so perhaps it might be all right for me, too. I dare say she is right.

My Clue of the Day is chosen for its amusing surface reading: “Tantrum leading to troubled life on Dutch agricultural land (5,5)”.

Yes, mostly 1*, but a frustratingly sharp ‘rallentando’ at the end with PENNON, TALENT, SUSPENDERS and CAST rather took the shine off things.
    Funny how that happens sometimes.

Same here – mostly write-ins, but I’ve never heard of CALENDULA , and the USP bit of SUSPENDERS is out of my comfort zone, so it was a DNF for me.

    I liked ENO for singers.

A DNF for me too, so convinced was I that 27ac ended in V(ehicl)E. No problems elsewhere though. Favourite was IMAGINES.

Held up (no pun intended) by SUSPENDERS – the answer was obvious but I took a while to see the parsing. Not sure what any solvers across the pond woiuld have made of that clue, though, since ‘suspenders’ over are ‘braces’ – for holding up trousers.
