i Cryptic Crossword 3410 by Dac

January 12, 2022

Difficulty rating (out of 5): 🌟

A very welcome appearance by Dac for my first blog of 2022. Certainly a case of 16ac rather than anything that 13ac, this was all pretty straightforward; even the legal term at 22ac turns up in crosswords often enough to be fairly well-known.

Bloggers, both here and on fifteensquared, often comment that there’s not a lot one can say about Dac’s puzzles and that seems to be reflected in the lack of further comments about this puzzle back in 2017, compared with the string of comments on the original blog of yesterday’s puzzle. And talking of yesterday’s puzzle, by one of those coincidences that occur in crosswordland, the answer to 8dn, LOG CABIN, was also an answer yesterday, though clued differently.

But back to today. As well as 13ac and 16ac I liked the two long down entries. I also liked HERONRY but for CoD I’ll go for 19dn: “What’s 254 cm? Singularly easy answer (5)”.

For that and all the other answers see http://www.fifteensquared.net/2017/10/25/independent-9683-by-dac/

My fastest solve by far. Didn’t know estop, but it couldn’t have been anything else.

About as quick as they get here too. Lovely as ever from Dac, with no issues or question marks at the close, the perfect puzzle really to follow on from yesterday’s far trickier offering.

Most unusually for a Dac, I did need e-help to get my Last One In, COCOTTE. One of those words that I recognised when I saw it, but which I was unable to dredge up from my memory even with the helpful crossing letters. Being a Double Definition (although only just so) I couldn’t construct it from word-play.

    Otherwise all very delightfully Dac.

What a difference a day makes! This was easily my fastest solve ever, a very welcome change from being totally 13ac-ed yesterday. Favourite was HERONRY, LOI was MAIL TRAIN.

    Self-esteem duly restored 😊

Yes – very different from yesterday. I too spotted LOG CABIN as being an answer in another recent puzzle. A most enjoyable solve – many thanks. But, a bit more cryptic than usual in places for Dac? And was there a hint of a train theme?

Dac didn’t usually do themes, but I see what you mean, linking 21ac with 7dn and 17dn – and an ardent railway enthusiast might add 6dn; ‘Big Bertha’ was a nickname for the unique banking engine built to help trains up the steep Lickey incline near Birmingham.

I wouldn’t go so far as to claim any “fastest ever” stats, but it certainly was swift and painless; I was finished by 8am, and that after having already done Moo in the FT, for reasons.

A sting in the tail of an otherwise tame enough beast; COCOTTE rang no bell at all, and neither definition was known.
But apart from that there was much to admire (rather than be tested by) as usual.
