i Cryptic Crossword 3105 Dac

January 20, 2021

Another pretty gentle solve, which leads me to wonder if we have tougher challenges in store for the rest of the week. It’s Dac, so we make up what we lose in quantity (of time) with quality, so certainly no complaints here. Unusually for him I do have the one question mark, as to whether the A at the start of 21ac is adequately signposted, but apart from a brief moment of fussing about where 20d lies geographically, the answer was forthcoming enough. A lot of the rest did not need to be fully parsed, but I did pause to note that 14ac and 2d at first glance left me a little flummoxed as to what was going on. No doubt with a little more thought I would have seen the light, but this is what we have Fifteensquared for, isn’t it?

First in, yes you guessed it 22d where I started, last in 19ac, but only because I almost forgot to solve it, finish time close to being as quick as they get.

COD? With lots to pick from as ever, I’ll go with 2d – “Cooked sole apt to need sprinkling of salt and dressing (11)”.

To September 2016 for all the answers and parsing of the clues:

Somebody here or on 225 paid Peter the compliment of describing her(?) puzzles as an eaaier verson of Dac, and I thought the same of Raich yesterday, but completed today’s quicker than either.

Had a chuckle at 1a and was surprised to find another homophone at 5a. Slight hold-up in NW corner with 1d LOI after finally remembering PATHE.

In 21a, I thought “fellow from 20” was sufficient definition, the immediately preceding “a” being the beginning of the wordplay, accompanied by the other three parts.

    👍 but over too soon!

    What Denzo said re 21.
My last ones in were 2dn and then 11ac, but the rest of it was pretty smooth going. No quibbles today 🙂

Agree with Denzo re 21ac (although I’ve only just spotted it), and *snap* with dtw42, I had the same last two in.

The only slight delay for me was unthinkingly writing in ‘recon’ for the start of 16ac instead of ‘trans’, but my mistake was clear enough when solving 14dn.

Very nice. Clear clues with great surfaces. Only complaint was that it was a little too easy, even for me. All done before lunch was finished 😕.
    Similar experiences to everyone else.

My favourite was 14 across because it was such a great clue, and needed teasing out to understand it.

All good, as one expects from Dac. A pleasure to solve, just wish there was more of it, as it were.

No problem with the A in AFRICAN. But, yes, the crossing ELASTOPLAST and TRANSFIGURATION were the only ones where I had to think for a bit about the parsing.

All jolly, setting the stage for something a little more time consuming tomorrow. Well, one lives in hope.

Another elegant crossword from Dac, where I felt compelled to not simply bolt it down but to take time to savour the construction of, well, every one of those clues. Masterful.
