i Cryptic Crossword 3034 Dac

October 28, 2020

Mid-week rolls around with Dac back in his customary spot, and a puzzle that shouldn’t really have caused too many difficulties. The song title was my LOI, for the most part really because I couldn’t see for an age what would fit A?N? from the anagram fodder and obligatory HAT. At the close though thankfully it was a title most solvers would have heard of, unlike yesterday, and I suspect it will have been solved a lot sooner by those sharper than me today. ie. Those who actually managed to get any sleep last night. Thankfully we have coffee, and a puzzle that was completed in a time less than half that par for these parts.

COD? Well, you could pick loads, couldn’t you? I’ll go with 13d – “A weapon concealed in cracker? It’s of little importance (9)”.

To June 2016 for all the answers and parsing of the clues:

Not much time, so just what I needed. Some fun -I guessed DO in 3d was definition but thought Do in sense of swindle until my penultimate, 9a gave me the F. About 20 CODs , my favs were CIVIL LIBERTIES and MOHICAN.

Always a pleasure to have a Dac to solve. The song was likewise my last 9ne in, as the crossing g letters allowed the anagram to unfold. I was held up for a bit by thinking the last word must be “theme” but I got there in the end.

Last one parsed, however, was SOUTHERNER. I presumed that the old rail company was “Southern” and wondered what to do with the “er” and the “bitter”.

Only criticism, if I’m looking for one, is that “Inca wrecked” doesnt quite work with my pronunciation, although its funny enough to not be a problem, and I dare say it works better when pronounced by others.

Easy-end Dac today, easy-end Phi yesterday, beginner-level Peter on Monday… If we don’t get something a bit meatier soon I’m going to start complaining about difficulty level as much as our friend the tortoise!

All very clear and lucid of course, so it comes as no great surprise that my notional nurse did indeed exist. Thought that was a bit odd, but that’ll be my ignorance, without doubt. Otherwise like falling off a series of logs really, but done with an aplomb rarely rivalled.

Huzzah!! A crossword completed fully and enjoyed. Yes, too easy for some but I, for one, need puzzles like this to keep me sane. 🙂

From a long time lurker on this site who can only ever complete the easier crosswords, I really enjoyed this. Hello to everyone too – thanks for all your (unwitting) help in the past…

My LOI, and the only one not really parsed, was 3dn (I couldn’t see the S(T)UFF); but despite that, it was all done by 8.05 over the breakfast table, and none the worse for that. Yes, the song was familiar.

More catching up, which should speed up a bit now we’re in lockdown #2.

Found this a little chewier than the average Dac. I wasn’t helped by pencilling in DAHL for 25 across. A valid answer, I think, but the real answer is better, being a generic term for food.
