i Cryptic Crossword 3006 Raich

September 25, 2020

Saboteur is otherwise engaged today, so it’s left to me to blog what is usually one of the trickier days of the week. Instead though we have an IoS reprint, which we haven’t seen on a Friday for a while. Pretty straightforward, the only slight bother I had was the parsing of 21d, which was my LOI, but that is just because the clue was so well done, as ever with Raich, as was the crossword as a whole. It’s almost enough to make you want to subscribe to the Times where I understand he mostly sets these days. Nothing else really to comment on, except to say that this was a lovely little puzzle to end the working week.

COD? 19ac raised a smile – “Too great a toll? (7,7)”.

To June 2016 for all the answers and parsing of the clues:

As you say, Jon, a lovely little puzzle, smooth surfaces, fair parsing and definitions, though I did manage to find difficulties of my own. LAST is obvous once you see it, but it was my last as it took me too long. I hesitated on AROMATISE, as I couldn’t think of an instace of scent as a verb. 19A also held me up – with H and G I was lookig for HIGHEST something. My favourite was SHE-BEARS.

After a day’s rest from puzzle-solving yesterday (lucky for me, I really do struggle with Monk’s offerings), an enjoyable and fairly straightforward return today.

All the long ones went in pretty quickly and I was delighted to see my favourite vegetable make an appearance at 6dn! I only struggled in the NW corner, 1ac and 1dn taking longer than they should. I thought I’d finished, then spotted an uncompleted 7dn, so that was my LOI and, like Denzo, my favourite of the day.

So Saboteur gets the hardest puzzle of the week again and again, but the week he’s away Friday’s turns out to be a gentle stroll in the park. Typical!

Very much what we expect from Raich, which is to say a gentle puzzle impeccably done. Wonder if we’ll see our esteemed blogger emeritus, Sprouthater, today?

All smooth & comfortable here today, too. No marginal annotations of any kind.
