i Cryptic Crossword 2978 Poins

August 24, 2020

An IoS reprint to start the week, but one it must be said I struggled with mightily, recording my longest solve in yonks. Perhaps it was the unfriendly grid, perhaps it was the mild feeling of exhaustion that besets me as ever on a Monday morning, or perhaps it was genuinely tricky. We have one big obscurity at 10ac that perhaps could have been clued less ambiguously and an equally obscure horse referenced in the wordplay at 21d, but most of the rest seems to have been fairly clued, so perhaps it was just me. Let me know how you got on though.

One clue has been rewritten since the original outing at 17d, with an unfortunate typo as it should be “Kiarostami”. The wordplay is an anagram of “earth” followed by TEN, a film I was blissfully unaware of until now.

COD? I’ll go with 25ac – “Helps assistant to remove ass’s head from Bottom (8)”.

Definitely agree on this one! My new approach to crosswords is to have a go and carry if I am enjoying the solving but not waste time if it’s a struggle. 9a was difficult for me. I would never pronounce it like that. Is it a north v south thing?

I didn’t find this as tricky as Jonofwales seems to have done, but it was certainly more challenging than I expected on a Monday.

I do think AMRITA was unfair. It’s an obscure answer, and there were several female names that could have gone in (I thought of Tina, Gina and Nina before trying Rita, and I did contemplate “diva” for a moment) even though the A and M were clear enough.

Okay, I couldn’t do most of the bottom half, so gave up.

It’s 00:45 and I thought I’d have another look before going to bed, having filled in the top half earlier in the day (yesterday now!).
Filled in the bottom half in double quick time, although I did have to google the founder of De Beers I’m ashamed to say.
I’ve no doubt my late-night inspiration is down to the small glass of whisky I just finished. Goodnight all…
