i Cryptic Crossword 2903 Tyrus

May 28, 2020

I think the best summary of today’s puzzle would be that it was indeed a good one, a very good one actually, but one that was too difficult for a weekday. To be fair I made good progress to the south, filling in the bottom half of the grid with little ado, but the rest, well… It was only after a lot of staring at blank space, much soul searching, and finally getting 1/8 that the rest fell, albeit with most of the answers guessed based on definitions and checking letters, just because of time constraints. Which is a pity, because there’s lots of nice stuff going on, with I note a couple of smiley faces jotted beside the clues which is always a good sign. Can we please have Tyrus on a Saturday again next time, though, please?

First ones in down to the SE, LOI 11ac, finish time as it transpires over par but not considerably so, so perhaps this wasn’t as difficult as it felt while solving? Or a case of needs must.

COD? Well, I couldn’t resist nominating this one. 15ac – “Frenchman with female is the right size for mounting – Viagra? (9)”.

Over to March 2016 for the answers and parsing of the clues, which I’m suspecting might be needed more than usual today:

It didn’t seem all that tough by Tyrus’ standards to me, but he’d be a good candidate for a Saturday residency, right enough. Nearly all excellent today, although 24ac gets a raspberry from me for wilful obscurity. Without supposing for a moment that the COD would be anything other than 15d, I did especially like 21d. Can’t recall seeing it before, and it’s a nice spot.

Hmm. Middling solve time for me – think I finished around 10.25. Some clues I liked (had a tick against 11ac and ‘ha’ against 19dn), but in other places I was irritated by either juvenilia or smartassery (e.g. 15dn, 13dn, 1/8ac).

I loved this. True, it was tough, but it was spectacularly good. I think everything I was going to say has already been said.

Not my day. Filled in the SE corner plus a smattering elsewhere, but finally gave up in favour of preparing for this afternoon’s BBQ.

What Batarde said really. Pepper copy today, and I was so intent on solving the thing that only 21d interrupted my concentration enough to garner a tick, though doubtless others deserved them.
On the other hand I didn’t think much of the straight cryptic at 6d, think ‘MET up’ in 13d should have had a QM, and still don’t see the definition for 20a. If it’s simply ‘this fellow’, I don’t like that either.
      Otherwise all good stuff.

V late post again due to relativistic time lapse (lot of it about) – spotted 1/8 early on (fun!) and amused as always by risqué 15 & 22 – but confidently inserted ‘prompter’ for 11 before my LOIs 5 and 6 – was I the only one?

I must have done this back in 2016 as once I got the top and bottom acrosses I remembered them, but I still struggled and eventually resorted to a wordfinder for 20 and 21. But there were some excellent clues and it was worth the effort to finish.
