i Cryptic Crossword 2896 Dac

May 20, 2020

Dac’s back with an offering that hopefully will be less divisive than recent puzzles. I fairly shot through the NE and SE corners, slowing down a little to the NW, only to find that the SW corner was a step up again in difficulty again. Finally twigging the arcane film certification referenced at 26ac, and unpicking what was a lovely bit of wordplay at 21d proved to be key, and the rest duly fell. We have a slightly odd definition at 3d that arguably could have done with a “Scots” reference, but I doubt it held up many solvers for long. I did have to confirm the song title referenced at 1ac, assuming that it was something rather longer, but as expected Dac was quite correct. Despite this I finished well under par for the i, so overall a nice easy, and as ever thoroughly enjoyable puzzle.

COD? As ever loads to pick from, with my nomination going to 22ac – “Novel delivered by a northern writer once (8)”.

To February 2016 for all the answers and parsing of the clues:

I too thought 21d had excellent wordplay, and also thought 14a and 7d outstanding. Very, very good all round really.
Quite surprised to see three different attempts at finding fault with this lovely puzzle on the other side, all of which predictably proved unfounded.

I saw nothing whatsoever to criticise and much to admire; nonetheless it was over and done with very quickly, throwing me back onto the logic puzzles in no time flat.

However, ‘twould be churlish to complain about a puzzle which wasn’t pitched right at my preferred difficulty level, wouldn’t it?

All very nice thank you! You know that, with Dac, everything in going to be all fair. I’m happy for a change 😀

Just when I was beginning to feel depressed at my lack of recent success, along comes DAC to cheer me up!
Thoroughly enjoyed this one, although for a moment I thought it was going to be too easy, but the SW corner held me up for a while and gave me something to chew on.
Didn’t understand 3d or the wordplay in 14a until I checked the blog on the other side, but absolutely no complaints. Can I submit a vote for 18a, my LOI, I thought it was a lovely clue.
Now to pot on those tomato plants…

The SW corner seemed to me as well to be a little trickier than the rest, HOSTAGE being the only clue I struggled with. Otherwise the usual delight from Dac.

I didn’t know what sort of musical instrument a MARIMBA was, but trusted it to be a xylophone – and had no issue with “Maria” being a Sound of Music song. Likewise, I had no idea which musician EMERSON might be, but was sure there would be one if DAC said so.
