i Cryptic Crossword 2892 Hypnos.

May 15, 2020

This is turning out to be a very good week for i cryptics. Today’s puzzle from Hypnos is certainly at the more accessible end of the scale, but it was good and satisfying to complete. I could do worse than quote and endorse PeeDee’s 2016 blog: “A straightforward puzzle, but said as a compliment.  No gimmicks or clever-clever stuff, just straightforward interesting and enjoyable clues.”.

There was little in the way of obscurities. I dare say AI WEIWEI is sufficiently well-known. It’s possible EMINENCE GRISE is unfamiliar, but maybe not. Some nice quirky definitions, for example EDITORIAL, VALOUR and LOCKSMITH. But all very fairly clued and all gettable.

Clue of the Day? I nominate the aforementioned 1ac: “Top methods becoming pronounced in Chinese artist (2,6)”.

Yep, straightforward and fun too. I couldn’t remember how to spell the artist’s name, but the rest went in with little ado.

Hypnos is a setter whose style I’ve never quite pinned down; a lot of this felt like doing an easier-end Times puzzle (except for Mr Prost perhaps and Mr Pebbles at 1ac of course), so perhaps that’s how I’ll think of him.
    Good stoof.

A low key end to the week: no difficulties and no quibles. I did think that 18d was a superior clue for that familiar brave leader.

GERONIMO two days on the trot, what are the chances of that?

Got of to a roaring start, 1a and 5a both write-ins (or should that be writes-in?). Needless to say, things slowed after that, but managed to complete the grid in reasonable time (for me, at least).
Thoroughly enjoyed the puzzle, but was somewhat miffed at the need to use crosswordsolver both for SLUGGISHNESS and my LOI, EVICT!
