i Cryptic Crossword 2872 Dac

April 22, 2020

It’s Wednesday, so it’s Dac, and a pretty gentle offering overall. Thankfully, as the return to work continues as frantically as it started. I had a slight issue with 13d, having missed the “wood” bit in the wordplay for reasons that escape me now – probably carelessness – and agree with the comments over on the other side that ACCURATE is the correct synonym for 5ac (and it was indeed what I first lobbed in), but apart from that there’s nothing to argue about, and much to enjoy. So as I really must get on I’ll just note that my first in was 1ac just for a change, last in the aforementioned 13d, with a finish time under par for the i.

COD? I’ll go with 13ac, and not only because for a change I got a bird name straight off – “Bird makes fellow cross: she has drink behind bar, topless (4,10)”.

I can accept that Dac’s intention in 5ac was a sort of abbreviated form of ‘that which is absolutely right’, which does indeed define ACCURACY, but it didn’t stop me binging in the wrong answer – in common with many it seems. Then CROSSHEAD being defined by a surely specialist bit of piston-engine vocabulary (where crosshead screws are surely widely known) all seemed a bit un-Dacian at the end.
Otherwise the usual loveliness from the master of puzzles at this level of difficulty.

Ditto what has been said about ACCURACY. And ditto what Cornick said about CROSSHEAD.

Otherwise, the usual delight from Dac. I needed to check what a MYOLOGIST does, but it was very fairly clued with helpful crossing letters.

In full agreement with the above. 3d earned itself a 🙂

I needed a little help in the SW corner – 13dn of course; but the rest of it was smooth enough (yes, 5ac gave momentary pause to frown, but i did put in the right version).
13ac gave me a big grin. (The best guess for what a skirwingle is, is that it’s a manx shearwater…)

Another who got 5ac wrong on the first attempt. Apart from that no problems. This virus thing has brought home the fact that I am elderly, something that I have previously ignored, but I wasn’t best pleased to realize that according to Dac I’m a codger however this was nothing to the high dudgeon I felt at 4dn, a Crock, me I’ve never been so offended. Snowflake rant over.
