i Cryptic Crossword 2788 Dac

January 15, 2020

Time being short today, I was glad to find not only that Dac is occupying his customary slot in the i, but also that this was towards the easier end of the spectrum. I’m afraid that this has been one of those days where I didn’t have time to do the puzzle justice, lobbing answers in on definitions, checking letters here and there, and basically getting away with it. No real unknowns beyond the Yorkshire location I sort of knew, and the DJ whose first name I’d forgotten, but the wordplay sorted both out very nicely thank you. 🙂 Finish time comfortably under par for the i, and now I’m afraid I must dash…

But not before nominating my COD, which goes to 18d – “Energy needed after three lessons in school? I’ll supply fruit (4,4)”.

To August 2015, when this was something of a landmark puzzle:

As my school reports often said “must try harder”….. silly errors meant I made several gaffes, slapping in answers without thinking. For example, of course Srauss was Austrian (!), solvent at 21a, “cinerate” for 1a. Nevermind (2a album), I enjoyed the ones I got. 😀

Was I amused by 12ac? Not ‘alf! All very jolly and just the thing for the hard-pressed blogger. Agreed on the COD, which stuck out like a sore thumb.

All very straightforward and completed in well under average time. First in was EIGHTY, and then I worked more or less systematically anti-clockwise fro NE to SE, with LAZY SUSAN being my last in. The only incident en route was putting in “ciabatta” at 1d instead of CHAPATTI, before realising that although it fits, there was no way the word- play could be made to work.

I wonder how many younger solvers know of ALAN FREEMAN?

Agreed on COD, certainly, but I for one would have welcomed something a bit more substantial on this particular Wednesday. Shall have to check out something 16a.

  5. Was convinced that the 20d bird was a redbill.

Apropos of Alan Freeman, I’ve just finished a Boatman puzzle in which one of the last words in was “FLUFFY”. Small world, innit?
