i Cryptic Crossword 2782 Dac

January 8, 2020

Week in and week out we get a quality offering from Dac, but for me this was him at his best. Fabulous clues, always clear wordplay, no reliance on trickery, no obscurities beyond 17d which is as gettable as you’d like, an object lesson all in all in how it should be done.

The parsing of 10ac I was a little unsure about, but the good folk on Fifteensquared agreed with my vague musings. 16ac was perhaps a little trickier to parse, but the checking letters in the second half of the answer were enough of a nudge in the right direction, and the whole then fell with a smile.

Beyond that there is a little to say, but in a good way. Loads of ticks beside my COD nomination, in particular 14ac, 1d and 26ac, which goes to the aforementioned 16ac – “Oh! Is that how the compiler views these sweets? (4,6)”.

First in the first one I looked at, being 25d, last in 21d which did give me a little pause for thought at the close, finish time the fastest this year.

Over to the end of December 2015 for all the answers and parsing of the clues:

PS. Is it just me, or is there a very rare error in the Five-Clue Cryptic?

    Absolutely delightful!

Wasn’t sure how to parse RAIDS but the explanation on Fifteensquared is fine. Puzzled for a moment or two by LOVE HEARTS (takes me back to my childhood!) but a very big smiley face drawn when the penny dropped.

Ah, LOVE HEARTS was the only one I bunged in unparsed.
At the end I was left with 15dn and 14ac; must admit I resorted to a wordfinder for the former (the only word I could think of that fit ??E?A?I?R was ‘grenadier’ and I knew it wasn’t that … as it turned out the right answer was the only other word that would fit) … and then 14ac became apparent. I liked 9ac.

    Agreed, this was a humdinger.
I especially liked the balance of the clues today – plenty of container types (13, I think), just 3 judiciously chosen full anagrams and one partial, plus that cracking bit of innovation at 16a which narrowly pipped 19a and several other beauties (12a, 13d, 15d) as my favourite. Very much appreciated!

All spiffy. My only complaint concerns the layout, and Topsy gave that an airing yesterday.

Mr B, had I not had such a dreadful day today, artisan-wise, I was poised to rant at the editor. If it is the same tomorrow then they get it with all of my 20a!!!

As a leftie, I do like having the puzzle on the left so I can read the clues and write at the same time. #everyday hand-ism

  6. Beaten by 28 across which I answered as sunless. 😦
