i Prize Cryptic Crossword 2744 by Phi

November 30, 2019

Saturday 23rd November 2019

If we are to believe what we read, today’s editorial should provide reassurance for us all. Following the alarming news of change of ownership to the Rothermeres (yes, as in the Daily M**l), the i will apparently retain its editorial independence and also its supply chain from the Independent; there’s also a promise to ‘invest in journalism’. Well, if the Mirror and the Express can share an owner, I suppose anything is possible.

As to last Saturday’s crossword, I thought Phi was on very good form indeed. In a parallel world we could imagine all double-word answers having a blank square between the two halves, like an em space, and that the two halves would be lined up in the same row or column. Which is exactly what Phi gave us last week with BATHING MACHINE, TURKISH DELIGHT, THERMAL PRINTER, and INERTIA SELLING. Extremely gruntling that.

No quibbles either – my LOI was 19a EASED which was maybe a little convoluted SE[t] inside [h]EAD, but perfectly parsable with a little thought in retrospect.

So all in all very happy to have Phi back in the Prize slot. Hope you enjoyed it too.

Yes, there was something very pleasing about the layout of this one.

I got a bit stuck in the SW corner, with the crossing 25a and 17d. I got hung up on “past” being clued by “history” (when it was actually just “hist”) which made 17d – RATCHET – ungettable. All sorted by the trick of putting it down and picking it up again a couple of hours later. Otherwise all good.

As to today’s, all good apart from a bit of parsing to unravel.

I was reasonably gruntled with this one, but this week’s is more to my taste. My only annotation is “oh dear” next to 14d: really, you’d hardly need to be awake to write or solve that clue.

As regards the change of ownership, the idea of giving a brass farthing to the Rothermeres does not appeal one little bit, never mind that the i will supposedly be a discrete entity.

Yes, I suspect most of us are pulling a “:-/” face at the i ownership news. We’ll just have to wait and see, I suppose.

Re last week’s puzzle – no marginal comments or annotations really here. As discussed then, my last two in were 17dn and 22ac – by quite a way.

This week, all in quite happily* except 22dn – another one of those damned _x_x four-letter-words. I’ve got a possible answer but I’m not convinced of it, so [shrug].

    *well, “tsk” again against 26ac.

Yes, a good puzzle that was on the easy side for Phi, enjoyed.

Regarding the i’s change of ownership, I suspect nothing will change. Why bother buying a brand only to meddle overly with the formula? Regarding the owners, I must admit to not having heard of them before today. 🙂
