i Cryptic Crossword 2747 Dac

November 27, 2019

It’s a Wednesday, it’s Dac, and a puzzle that should appeal to a broad range of solvers. Accessible as ever, with much to appreciate in the cluing, but with added gristle today to give us something to get our teeth into. The Spanish bits and engine in particular caused me some difficulty, as did 16d, but that was because I persistently misread the definition as being “[u]ndulating”. I suspect I need to start wearing glasses when doing these, especially on dim days like today. The temptation to lob in DEMO for 1ac was pretty strong, but I resisted it and took note of the wordplay for once. Lessons learnt, and all that.

Finish time a little over par for the i, though with an interruption to deal with a blocked toilet.

COD? I did like the way 19ac was so neatly put together, but it’s got to be Thomas, just because it made me smile. 30ac – “Perhaps Thomas – new boy – into Moroccan food? (4,6)”.

Having spent a significant chunk of yesterday evening picking away at the notorious Saga crossword, finally seeing off the last obscurity this morning, I was about ready for something sensible. All good, no significant hold ups, and I should think everybody will be pretty contented with it.

Agreed, a thoroughly enjoyable puzzle with a broad appeal. First one in was the second one I read, MAIN STREET, and then solved downwards from that.

No quibbles – it is a Dac, after all – and the only surprise which I had to check was KEENS being defined by “greets”, a meaning which was new to me.

1ac was my LOI due to unfamiliarity. The rest of it was dandy enough 🙂

I must be doing something right at last I virtually agreed with most of the comments.yrs a very pleasant & enjoyable crossword. Although I only was able to fill in 3/4 of grid in time allotted to me, even after looking at 15across the answers were understandable, well done mr Dac.
