i Cryptic Crossword 2608 eXternal

September 30, 2019

An enjoyable start to the week from eXternal that yet again I took to be an IoS reprint, only to find that, well, yet again it wasn’t. As straightforward as expected, anyway, and easier than last week’s IoS reprint. 🙂 There were a couple where the parsing eluded me – notably at 9ac – but as all the answers were pretty common vocabulary I never came unstuck, given the definition and enough letters. Pierre over on the other side had a bit of a moan about how involved some of the clues were, but this sort of thing is right up my street so I was a very satisfied customer.

COD? The decidedly uninvolved but smile-raising 24d – “Water pipe’s hollow sound (4)”.

Choky?! That ought to win a prize of some sort … I certainly choked on it. Anyway, leaving that aside this was a pleasant surprise and picking apart the more involved clues was all good fun.

Yers, I thought that one was a bit rich too – but otherwise all fine. Must admit to getting a little electronic help for the last two or three (e.g. 5dn, 12ac) but that was definitely down to me being too lazy to put the effort in.

I did rather well today apart from one of my nonsense parsings at 20d which muddled things for a time…… Gall ops! Ah well, must try harder 😀

I found it nicely convivial until my last few in the NW corner, especially the choke clue, which made Tyrus, anagram indicators look blatantly obvious by comparison.
Put me down as another fan, in general, of the multi-part convoluted clue; but preferably not at the same time as outside-the-box solutions or anagrinds.

Prize for ‘choky’? Wooden spoon? How can it possibly suggest rearrangement of letters? I must be missing something since neither Pierre not anyone who commented on his blog seems to have mentioned it.

Choky seems to have been mentioned both here and on the other side several times, and is indeed a little odd.
