i Cryptic Crossword 2651 Dac

August 7, 2019

Its Wednesday and its Dac and as per usual there is not a lot to say its all so well clued even if you can’t quite fully parse the solution its all apparent once its written down or you go to the Fifteensquared blog where you end up giving yourself a slap, in my case it was primarily the Louse in 4ac and the Stalk in 10ac, I also didn’t know Sake was a beer but whilst the Ton = Fashion wasn’t a problem my personal blind spot of W = With was which is why 20dn and 27ac were my LO’sI. 14ac got a grimace, not that there was anything wrong with the clue just the whole thing is best avoided.

COD well 13ac, 20dn and 15dn are all worthy my pick is 5dn

It’s tough travelling without information (12)

Couldn’t believe rice wine was clued as beer, even though it was the obvious answer. Slight irritation in an otherwise OK crossword. For me, spurious is fine but downright wrong is annoying.

A notch or two trickier than the average Dac, but the same level of precision and polish as usual. All very enjoyable.

…trickier? I was all done before getting in to work. I’m the opposite to sprouthater in that ‘with’ for W comes naturally, but ‘fashion’ for TON is still utterly unfamiliar and seems destined never to stick in my head.

I must be thicker than usual today because I have no idea how ton = fashion!

Apparently (according to the OED, the 3rd meaning of “ton” is “a. The fashion, the vogue, the mode; fashionable air or style.; b. People of fashion; fashionable society; the fashionable world.”

No, I’ve never seen it outside of a crossword either. the most recent citation they’ve got for it is 1979 (and most are 19th-century).

  5. Put me down as another one who didn’t know sake was a beer and not rice wine. According to Wikipedia (so it must be true!) “Sake (Japanese: 酒, [sake]), also spelled saké (/ˈsɑːkeɪ/ SAH-kay US also /ˈsɑːki/ SAH-kee), also referred to as Japanese rice wine, is an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting rice that has been polished to remove the bran.”

Even by Dac’s impossibly high standards this was a beautifully constructed crossword. I came to it late in the day, but purred with appreciation throughout. Masterful.
