i Cryptic Crossword 2640 Morph

July 25, 2019

This will be my last daily blog for a few weeks while I’m off on holiday, and to be honest I can’t think of a better puzzle to end on. Morph’s always good value for money, and here he is with a Saturday Prize Puzzle reprint that’s as witty, lively and enjoyable as you’d like. Very much on the easy side, though with the RHS of the grid perhaps taking a little longer than the rest. I made life difficult for myself at the close by my inability to read my own writing – D.T.L to start 15ac, anybody? Upon finally deciphering my own scribbles I finished with a time still well below par for the i, and on a par with yesterday’s Dac. Just the one I couldn’t parse – 21d – but the answer was clear enough.

COD? Lots to appreciate as always, with my nomination going to 9ac – “Riot suppressed by repeated ultimatum? (6)”.

Back to May 2015 for all the answers and parsing of the clues:

Jeepers, that was a good ‘un. By my reckoning there are a dozen clues which would be strong COD candidates on the average day, so glad I didn’t have to choose. It would have been 20ac though. 🙂 Super stuff, and gratifyingly low on crossword commonplaces.

Happy holidays, Jon … we won’t wreck the place while you’re away, honest.

Bit too much for me in places but I can see why you cleverer uns enjoyed it. Happy hols Jon 😀

All done but the wordplay for 9ac and 20ac left me a bit bewildered and 18dn, well I probably have come across Tabu before but like Lea it just drew a blank so the answer went in with a large?
    Enjoy your holiday Jon.

Welp, I had about ¾ of this in nicely (ticks against 23dn and 5dn), then needed a bit more pencil chewing in the SW corner. Last ones in for me were 21dn, 26ac, 18dn, 17ac in that order.

Have a good hols, JoW, and don’t melt. 🙂

Pretty staggeringly good crossword that, but blimey – ‘very much on the easy side’ ! – not from where I was sitting!
Maybe an evening solve with politics on the telly is not the best accompaniment…
All solved & parsed satisfactorily though, with personal faves being the COD and the hummus at 14d.

Not quite the same political situation as when this first appeared in the Indy, but there are a few parallels with now, so was this deliberately selected for a reprint this week?
