i Cryptic Crossword 2639 Dac

July 24, 2019

Wednesday rolls round again, and with it a fairly gentle offering from Dac – thankfully for those of us who got little sleep last night due to the ridiculously un-British weather and accompanying thunderstorms. Just the one unknown for me at 4ac that was perfectly gettable from the wordplay, and elsewhere I only struggled for a brief moment to work out what term for soldiers to use at 6d. No question marks at the close, nothing controversial, just the usual top-notch mid-week offering.

COD? Too many to pick from, with Dac’s trademark smooth surfaces present as ever, my nomination going to 15d – “Island with noise and bustle? Several islands (9)”.

Yes, very much the same here, including the rolling thunderstorms. Ordinarily I’d have enjoyed that, especially since sleep wasn’t really on the cards, but unfortunately our elderly neighbour was whisked off in an ambulance at three o’clockish, so we’re awaiting news. As for the crossword, it’s flawless as usual.

Same here – 4ac was my LOI as I’d never heard of it either.

    Classic Dac indeed.
Plants are supposed to be my specialist subject, but I’d not heard of wait-a-but either.
Hope your neighbour gets returned safe & well soon, Batarde.

All very pleasant and completed before I finished my coffee (for a change). I spent a very cool and peaceful night because the sound of the AC drowned out the thunderstorms 😀

All very good LOI 4ac, only quibble is in describing 1dn as a Campaigner makes him sound almost benign instead of the evil character he was.

  6. New word of the day: “Wait-a-minute tree, wait-a-bit tree, or wait-a-bit plant are prickly plants that catch onto passers-by.”
