i Cryptic Crossword 2635 Alchemi

July 19, 2019

A nice puzzle from Alchemi to lighten the mood on this gloomy day. While nothing definite went in until 11ac, there were enough fairly straightforward clues to ensure a reasonably rapid grid fill. The only unknown for me was 20dn. Although 10ac doesn’t crop up in the news now as often as he probably did back in 2015, the clues plus a few crossers were enough to provide the solutions. Parsing in some cases proved a bit harder – 10ac, 26ac, 3dn and 7dn stood out here but they are all explained by RatkojaRiku over on the Fifteensquared blog which is where I found out that there is a Nina!

Plenty of good clues but my pick for COD is 9ac:

Michael, if you’re passing – hello there! Lots of fun with this puzzle which put me in a jolly good mood despite the drizzle. I fear that the splendidly clued 10ac requires a little update, as of the other week.

I remember at the time that the editor said we’d better get this one in quick because he might not be in office much longer!

And please tell Nestor that Grant isn’t President now.😁

Hello there from me too, Alchemi!

Good fun and very rewarding and satisfying to complete. Somewhat easier than my first read-through suggested, but once I had tuned in it was all very nice and fair. I could not parse NEMESIS or CADDIE, but it was clear what the answers were, and having seen the explanations on Another Website, I wonder why had a problem.

ALEXIS TSIPRAS has been supplanted as PM of Greece…. Great clue, but perhaps ultimately is being made to do double duty.

Sorry it looks as though everyone else got there before me ‘re the Greek PM. ☺

Off on my holidays now, so my contributions may be a bit sporadic, depending on the availability of i newspapers and how much crossword-time my family willtolerate. ☺

Ah. I thought it might be Alexis Someone-or-other, but I failed to bring that particular here-today-gone-tomorrow politician to mind alas, so a DNF for me.
    Otherwise all pretty good.
Enjoy the hols Michael – good time to be leaving methinks.

Enjoyed this one. I failed on the Greek chap but everything else fell with a bit of dedication and inspiration. 6d reminded me of one of my favourite TV plays ever ‘Edna The Inebriate Woman’ . Should I take up crossword setting as a hobby, I will be working that one into a NINA somehow.

  6. Missed the nina. New word of the day: a language spoken in Ethiopia, apparently

    Nina, what Nina? 😉

Easier to the south than the north, enjoyable throughout, a nice end to the working week. Oh yes, the Greek chap, I had to look him up.
