i Cryptic Crossword 2579 Hieroglyph

May 15, 2019

No Dac this week, but an IoS reprint from Hieroglyph that was, as expected, over rather quickly. There’s one obscurity at 1ac – an archaic term that could perhaps have done with a rethink given the target audience – but the answer was pretty obvious, so no complaints here beyond a ? beside the clue. Lots of ticks too – 7d, 5ac, 9ac and 13ac all earning plaudits. So, enjoyed… First in 9ac, last in 1ac, finish time similar to Monday’s.

COD? In addition to the ones listed above, I particular liked 2d, if only for the nice misdirection – “Bucks term of endearment: “a right sausage, at heart” (7)”.

Yes, very quick today, and for the most part a pleasure to solve. I did think that if you want to use a term described by the OED as obsolete and are keen to stay on the solver’s good side, 1ac is perhaps not the best place to put it. Not desperately taken with the “given as a gift” thing, either – but neither of these quibbles caused any real problems.

Very nicely done for an easy-end puzzle. It felt like there were a lot of charade style clues, so I did a quick tally and reckoned it about 20, out of the 29 clues which might be a record. Not complaining though, as they were very well constructed, I thought.
I do agree though about the archaism at 1a and also the unknown (to me at least) abbreviation DD for ‘gave as a gift’ at 18a.

Yes, nice and straightforward, and an enjoyable solve.

I agree about the archaism in BUDGET, and the D.D. thing as well. Both went in with little hesitation after I had the crossers in place, but with a puzzled frown.

Once again I did most of it as quickly as the rest of you, then slowed down with a few in the NW corner (e.g. 1ac, tsk – never heard of that sense of BUDGE). I actually came here with one last word unsolved – 20ac. Hey ho. Surely there should be a time limit on things like footballer=BEST? After all, setters have thankfully abandoned princess=DI.

I thought 20A, with its quadruple definition was superb! Well worth keeping him out of retirement with such a clue!

Took a few hours of perservering but finally managed to complete this without any assistance- a rarity from my end on any day. Great crossword for a beginner/improving solver. 20ac was my favourite, don’t see many quadruple definitions.
