i Cryptic Crossword 2577 Quixote

May 13, 2019

A gentle introduction to the working week from the Don with the usual mix of straightforward clues and the odd clearly flagged obscurity. A LITTLE what? Mexican cities? No fear, Quixote’s always user-friendly clues will steer you home safe and sound. Flashling over on the other side is somewhat disparaging, but I think tbh this is pretty typical Monday fare, and I’m not complaining the morning after a birthday that had the poor grace to fall on a Sunday. First in 8ac which seasoned solvers will have seen countless times before, last in 1ac which they won’t, finish time about half par for the i.

COD? 17d – “Indian city to the south of province invaded by a river (7)”.

To January 2015:

Agreed, a nice steady Monday solve, with no deviousness or nasty surprises.

No quibbles of the crossword kind, but isn’t the city of Durango in the USA, and it’s Mexican namesake a state?

Had to check that a little slam was indeed a thing in cards, and that volute was a spiral of sorts, but both easily gettable.

All done and dusted very quickly (for me). I kind of agree with Flashling about the old chestnut at 8a but I thoroughly enjoyed the rest. I couldn’t work out where “see” came in at 18d but all is explained on the other side. btw, Jon, I hope you had an enjoyable birthday ๐Ÿ˜€

I wonder how many crosswords Don Manley has written by now? Quixote, Pasquale, Duck, Bradman, Giovanni, Izetti… all him… It must be some thousands by now, so itโ€™s hardly surprising if he churns them out at times – especially when the Indyโ€™s rate of pay is more suited to a hobbyist than a full-timer like him.
So yes, this felt a bit work-a-day, but thatโ€™s only to be expected, I suppose.

Whizzed through this quick as a flashling.. All fun & fair, I thought. Good Monday stuff.

A belated “many happy returns” to Jon. ๐Ÿ™‚

The crossword was … all right. Perhaps we’ve been spoilt recently by Raich’s efforts on a Monday.

Whizzed through most of this but couldn’t see 1ac /1dn and only just been bothered to check 1ac, with all the checking letters in they couldn’t really be anything else but 1ac is not something I’ve come across before unlike 8ac and 24ac.
    Belated Birthday wishes Jon.

Subscribers to the i might be interested to know that the app you have access to now contains interactive versions of all the day’s puzzles from the newspaper. I’ve just had a go, and it looks pretty neat.

Pretty much what sprouthater said: all but two of this were done in no time, with just 1ac and 1dn left staring at me blankly for ages. Eventually managed to work out what 1ac had to be and looked it up (never did like references to bridge terms much but I suspect that’s just me), and then I was left with L_R_A so bunged in ‘LORCA’ since he’s a poet … oh well, one wrong letter, eh?
