i Cryptic Crossword 2561 Dac

April 24, 2019

A pangram which wasn’t, although interestingly it would have been an easy matter to include the W and Z with straightforward adjustments to 16 and 26. How odd. Hard to imagine that Dac would have overlooked that. Anyway, aside from that observation it’s the usual blogger’s nightmare from this compiler, with nothing whatsoever to quibble, muse or carp about.

Well, unless you have a boeuf with French stuff in your crossword, that is – in which case your gruntlement will have been less than complete. I liked both of those as it happens, although it’s a source of amazement when it turns out that such things aren’t long-forgotten after all. We also have a couple of foreign cities, possibly somewhat obscure; an irritating Americanism; contributions from India and the Caribbean, not to mention darkest Kent – giving the puzzle a cosmopolitan flavour. Nominations for COD are invited, since there are so many contenders; I’m going to plump for 7d:

“Horseman wants transport to go to Paris, nothing more (9)”.

An exemplary puzzle deserves an exemplary blog, so it’s a good job Duncan provided one for Fifteensquared in January 2015. Click here.

All very enjoyable and quickly completed even for a Dac! I was a bit uncertain about the wordplay for AXMAN, meaning, I suppose, that I could not be bothered to look up a list of Beatle ‘s songs. I have come across AXMAN before, and I was looking for somewhere to put an X in the mistaken expectation of a pangram. Last one in was REUS, which city I had not heard of, but once the crossers were in, there were only a limited number of options available.

With work pressing and seeing that it was a Dac, I thought I’d try doing this as a speed solve… Why do they bother? Takes all the fun away, as far as I can see.
However, there were no real hiccups in a typically smooth set of clues – just that dormitory town of Zaragoza causing a momentary raising of the eyebrow, and all done and dusted over breakfast in a time I forgot to check anyhow.

All fine here – what Michael said re REUS.

  4. Last one in: a Spanish place I’d never heard of. Given “_E_S ” there must be many other words that would have fitted, so why choose this I wonder?

A trying day with blokes tramping about the house putting in new windows and my old PC finally expiring so was pleased to find a relatively straightforward puzzle with just that confounded Spanish city giving any real problem, I was tempted to enter Alman at 26ac, they were both pretty handy with a guitar but couldn’t parse it , couldn’t parse Axman either though so it was a bit of a toss up.

As in the Allman Brothers Band?

Yes but I obviously cant spell their name correctly😁. Not really a fan apart from Jessica and I have been to the Big House Museum in Macon but only because my friend wanted to go.
