i Cryptic Crossword 2545 Punk

April 5, 2019

A Monday reprint from Punk in which he proves just how clever he is and in some cases just a bit too clever for this solver at least. Like Gaufrid who originally blogged this puzzle my first pass through the clues produced very little. Unlike him I didn’t get 1dn which would have been helpful, it was fairly obvious that an anagram was involved but dashed if I could see of what though. It was only after completing the SW corner that I filled the answer in with a question mark, the parsing of this didn’t exactly go down well at the time being described by one solver as “an atrocity”. Another minor quibble of mine was 17dn – where did the “I” come from? It seems that it was there when first printed so it must have fallen off!  Similarly 4dn where the U got a question mark.  22ac should have been solved quicker but I was looking for a solution beginning with S or B as the clue seemed to indicate, and the devices used at 11ac and 7dn both got tuts of disapproval during solving, but in hindsight they both get a tick of approval. I am sure 22/10 was a write in for everybody as the Hip – Hop band in question is so well known. Hmm.

For COD I found 20ac clever and amusing

Winged god changing direction, one at home on the range ?  (6,3)

Terrific! Chock-a-block full of invention and wit – provided you can actually do a Punk puzzle, he surely has to be the most creative and entertaining setter we have.
I had noted the missing ‘I’ in 17d, so just assumed it was a typo and wrote it in the clue myself (!) Less clarity elsewhere though – 2 or 3 bunged in without parsing – including the lift-and-separate bit of 1d, so I was relieved to come here and see that I’d guessed right.

Not usually able to get anywhere at all with a Punk puzzle, I was fortunate that 19a was my first one in and the U gave me “number” and being a groovy Nana meant I knew the band so 22/10 fell into place. 1d went in nicely without a clue as to why. Not highly enjoyable but at least I didn’t sling it aside for a change!

Another thumbs up here. I thought that was terrific, with too many good clues to list, though I will say it includes an unheard of tally of ones with three ticks, 9ac and 20ac among them.

The dropped “I” was unfortunate, but I didn’t notice TBH when solving.

The band in question were pretty big in their day and while not a fan, the answer was pretty much a write-in and one of my favourites. One of the strengths of the i and Independent puzzles has been their contemporary references, which are surely a must if we’re going to draw in new blood.

There were a couple I couldn’t parse, which didn’t matter because in went the answers anyway.

A thoroughly enjoyable outing all in all that had a fresh, lively feel about it.

I’m with Cornick here. To me this was the best puzzle of the week by far. 7, 11, 13 and 20 all struck me as very clever and original and I wouldn’t care to choose between them.
Just two quibbles – 1d, as the – I get it now, but it is a bit too much of a stretch. Definition in 6d is very questionable in that the producer is usually not the stage director.

Delighted to see Punk back after what feels like a lengthy absence. Leaving aside that missing “i” and the fact that 11ac is not synonymous with grass – which is entirely forgivable in a clue so good – nothing seems quibble-worthy to me. Incidentally, the U in 4d comes from “anyone can see” as in U certificate – a well established device, surely? I won’t say this was necessarily the best of the week but it was far and away the most fun.

A bit of a chore this one. I liked HASHISH and PLUMB, which I thought were clever in a good way and made me smile. APPENDIX as a “process”? Who knew?

First two thirds: fun & inventive. (22/10 got a smile & tick)
Last third: a struggle, with several put in without understanding the parsing. The missing ‘I’ caused a frown here too. Finished in the NE corner.

    Tortoise ain’t happy, I note.

  9. It was the SE corner that defeated me. I for one had not ever heard of the hip hop band I’m afraid.

I’m very late in again, I know, but had to pass comment on 17D. Clearly a survivor of one too many rounds with fiendish setters, I meekly accepted ‘clueless’ as a cheeky pointer to the missing i, whimpering grateful thanks to the mighty Punk. A typo?? The spell is broken.. But what a humdinger. Happily take this kind of abuse day after day. 😜
