i Cryptic Crossword 2535 Commoner

March 25, 2019

A good puzzle to start the week, pretty straightforward as expected being Commoner and an IoS reprint. One unknown for me at 13ac I was pleased to get correct, and a couple I failed to parse in the NW corner, principally OFFA that I wanted to be CNUT, eventually chucking in the answer on entering the crossing F with a shrug. “[Y]ours truly” at 13d surely leads to ME and not I, but elsewhere everything seemed to be clear and above-board.

Thanks to all BTW who commented on or solved yesterday’s Skirwingle puzzle – if you haven’t already, do check it out, it’s a good one.

COD? I did like 23ac – “16:51 of a workday? (4-2-4)”.

And if you finished that as quickly as I did, you may well have time enough to go back to Skirwingle’s highly recommended puzzle from yesterday.
I enjoyed the COD too, even if it was read & write. 9a a bit trickier, my LOI but a goodie.

Jolly pleasant and relatively smooth solve from me too. Last ones in were 10ac (where I was trying for too long to make ARDENT work) and then 1dn (where the parsing held out for a wile).

A nice easy start to the week and very enjoyable too. Agree about “yours truly” leading to “me”. Last one in was CAUTERTISED, which I did struggle wit for a while. One minor quibble from me: surely a show-off is not a poser but a poseur.

My only quibble is 9 because I cannot accept “caut” and “court” as homophones – it’s becoming an obsession with me I know – just want to acknowledge the importance of the R

Enjoyed that. Probably could have done without reminding about that 80s band, but the clue still gave me a smile.

Nice puzzle although I did enter18dn without knowing why and Wig = Shock got a bit of a tut. I really liked the contentious 21dn.
