i Cryptic Crossword 2489 Dac

January 30, 2019

Midweek wheels round, and not a moment too soon, with another fine offering from Dac. Nothing overly tricksy, nothing controversial, just the usual good puzzle. Unusually for a Wednesday there were one or two I couldn’t fully tease out – the name of the saint referenced in 3d I did know but couldn’t remember, the first part of the double definition at 20d left me suitably bemused, and I should have been able to but couldn’t parse 23d. My failing, and not Dac’s. Solved while engaged in a seemingly endless 2 hours and counting conference call in a time well under par for the i.

COD? Lots to pick from as ever, with my nomination going to the re-tooled 19d – “Unconventional rebel has captivated i reader (3-3)”.

Spiffing as usual. By coincidence, this is from an old Times crossword I did last night:

“Bloomer made raising kids in form (4,2)”

Speaks volumes about the quality of Dac’s clue writing, doesn’t it?

    A delight.

Could not parse WAY OUT but it seems so obvious now I know.; to echo Jonofwales, my failing, not Dac’s. Lots of ticks, and I loved the clue for FRENCH GUIANA.

All filled in and suitably admired as per usual for Dac.
However I felt a bit ignorant in the NW with 3 new bits of vocabulary that hapened to intersect each other: An ‘ordinary’ is a service book, ‘Aidan’ is a saint, and a ‘defile’ is a steep-sided passage. Oh well, live & learn, live & learn.

All good as usual LOI was 3dn not well versed with minor saints and the only Nadia I have heard of is Romanian.

Agreed with the general tenor of comments above – and specifically with Cornick’s – I finished in the NW corner with those too.

really enjoyed this one and all completed in a very leisurely fashion well before 8am. My 5.30am paper delivery is both a curse and a blessing!

  7. Another enjoyable solve. I liked the anagram of “I wondered”.
