i Cryptic Crossword 2473 Nestor

January 11, 2019

A Saturday prize puzzle reprint – so it might be a bit tricky… But surprisingly there were a lot of  clues that were fairly straightforward even if I couldn’t fully parse them – 15ac, 20ac and 17dn where Ent = Forester. Apparently it’s a Lord of the Rings thing. Also new to me was Ana for Gossip in 5dn, but it was 26ac which I couldn’t parse at all, but with a few checking letters in couldn’t be anything else. In the end though I needed some help as I was left with 18ac, 7dn and 22dn. 18ac I can understand even though I hadn’t come across the term before but 7 and 22dn, well they both went in with hopeful shrugs. Despite these obscurities and oddities I rather enjoyed this and have several candidates for COD with 12ac just coming out on top.

Reducing severity of X10, U18 in rough reports? (11)

22d got a hopeful shrug from me too, but reading the explanation in the Other Place it’s quite brilliant, unlike me. Top drawer stuff throughout and the most enjoyable puzzle of the week to my mind by a good margin.

Fun and enjoyable. I too put in ARAMIS with a shrug, and even after looking it up on Fifteensquared I’m not sure I understand how it work. Ana for gossip and Ent for forester were new to me, too, and luckily I put in EVA rather tgan ENA without knowing why….

Otherwise great fun and satisfying. I agree about 12A, but thought that the clue for HYGIENE was very neat, too.

Another good one from Nestor. Tricky to start, pretty easy in the middle, and tricky to end. 22d was my LOI with no understanding at all. Agreed on the COD.

My favourite kind of puzzle – took a long time but kept me engrossed throughout.
5 double ticks – which is almost unheard of from me – including the COD, and it would have been 6 had I realised the reasoning behind Aramis.

I had a tick by 20ac. Struggled overall though, and needed a lot of help in the end, and quite a few put in unparsed. 22dn was LOI – mark me down as yet another “with an [uncomprehending] shrug”.

  6. Another graceful defeat from me. It took a long while even to start, and gave up in the end with a quarter of the grid unfilled. Win some, lose some.

6d not in my Philips School Atlas but pretty obviously the answer – as was 22d my LOI – biffed it but would never have guessed the parsing. Own fave was 26a despite the above misgivings…

6d – Ghanaian – is someone or something that comes from Ghana, so the word ‘from’ in the clue should be thought of as being part of the definition.
