i Prize Cryptic Crossword 2457 by Phi

Did you spot the ghost theme? Despite being sure there must be one I didn’t, but according to the original blog from 2014 here, it seems we should have been looking more closely at the entries ‘SMELLs a rat’, ‘acquired TASTE’, ‘TOUCHstone’, ‘HEARINGs’, and ‘SIGHTs’… Ah, so that’s what was going on.

So a pretty regular and enjoyable offering from Phi – ‘Lob’ as a clumsy person was new to me, though ‘Drab’ as a prostitute rang a bell, and it was nice to be reminded of Crosophile’s clever Quincunx themed puzzle from a year or two back by 16d; there are some words you only ever meet in crosswords, it seems.

My COD nomination goes to the following:

3d Assigned a time and attempted to get round objection (10)

I hadn’t heard of Quincunx until the day before this puzzle was printed when Susie Dent explained it on Countdown. 10ac,13dn and 20ac all went in with shrugs but all the rest was good.

That took me back to Latin O-Level with the estimable Miss Grundy: some deadly dull business in the Gallic Wars about laying out pitfalls in a quincunx pattern. Once encountered never forgotten, it seems. Otherwise all pleasant enough if not especially memorable, and the theme flew under the radar as per.

Nope, didn’t notice the theme. Flew through, at least until I ran out of steam in the SW corner which took as long again. Oh well.

Quincunx has long been one of my favourite words so no problems there. Theme? … no, didn’t spot that. As to how well I fared overall, it’s too long ago to remember really. Sometimes I wonder if I should save the Saturday puzzle and do it on the following Friday just so I can join in a bit more actively here. Hey ho.
