i Cryptic Crossword 2460 Hypnos

December 27, 2018

A seasonal reprint from Hypnos today, though one I found unexpectedly to be on the tricky side. Perhaps I’m just over-tired. Perhaps it was just because I didn’t spot any of the festive songs particularly quickly. Perhaps it was the fairly odd word at 17d, a new (to me) variant spelling at 25ac, and a handful of sporting references that might as well have been Greek as far as I was concerned. At the close I had a full grid, with a couple of cheats to get there, and loads of question marks. Perhaps you fared better. 🙂

COD? I didn’t know the sportsman, but it’s still a good clue – “K Pietersen’s former teammate cutting tortured soul? That’s defamatory (9)”.

To Christmas Eve long ago:

I fared quite well, helped by 8d being one of the very few golfers I know. A good quality puzzle as usual from Hypnos, although some of the clues did strike me as – ahem – a little bit clumsy. 10/16/14 being the worst but not the only offender.

It must be the frame of mind I am in because, although I completed the grid, I found it too contrived for my taste. I didn’t even try to parse the songs with 14d being so obvious. I agree that there was some clumsiness and I will keep schtum about 17d!

I managed most of it fine (no – I didn’t try to parse the songs either) but needed help to finish in the SE corner. Agreed – 25 was a weird variant spelling of a weird word anyway. 18dn I didn’t parse and 17dn was last in due to being a vague cryptic-def clue to a wholly unfamiliar word. Hey ho.

All 3 Christmas songs entered as write-ins from the enumeration – parsing? who needs it?
The rest was fine, but my very sketchy knowledge of Spartan society meant combined with the absence of parsing meant I needed to cheat for 17d.
As well as the COD I also liked 17a.
