i Cryptic Crossword 2459 Eimi

December 26, 2018

A gentle, thoroughly enjoyable puzzle from the editor with an apposite theme I only very belatedly noticed. Yes, that’s where my head is today. My first in was right down in the SE corner with 28ac, at which point I thought I might have been in trouble, but then I remembered how to solve a cryptic puzzle and got on with it. Only the one question mark – I’d not heard of the novel referenced at 27ac – but the answer was reasonably certain. A few bits of lesser known vocabulary elsewhere, but most solvers will have been vaguely aware, at least, of all.

COD? With much to enjoy, I’m going with 10ac – “Doctor bringing in a different doctor in team to find vein (6)”.

Hope you’re all enjoying the holidays. 🙂

To Boxing Day many moons ago:

That was a pleasant surprise. I always have to give my head a wobble before taking on an Eimi, because he doesn’t come up often, alas, and he has his own distinctive style. Lots of fun, despite those islands and a French department (the latter being one of my pet hates). Surely the novel came up earlier this year? – at any rate it was familiar thanks to Radio 4 serialising it once upon a time, thus saving me the bother of ever having to read the thing. Just the right sort of puzzle for a Boxing Day, I’d say.

Is everybody enjoying the festive season so far? We are still recovering from the shock of having been given a rather splendid ceramic chicken by our neighbours. Mrs B is bemused, but I am tickled pink with it.

I think I need to concentrate more…. I had almost finished before it clicked what day it was!! Does it lay ceramic eggs, batarde?
