i Cryptic Crossword 2458 Quixote

December 24, 2018

A festive offering from the Don this Christmas Eve all the way from 2012, which does make me wonder if we haven’t seen it before. Though perhaps not if Eimi’s record keeping is better than mine. A lovely puzzle to start the week, nothing to tricky, especially if you spotted the line from the carol pretty sharpish. Elsewhere the wordplay was clear as the day is, surprisingly, today, when no doubt lots of us have got other things we should really be doing.

So I’ll just wish you all a very Merry Christmas, hope you have a great day. To all our tireless bloggers – Cornick, Batarde and Sprouthater (what a nightmare time of year 😉 ) – many thanks, as ever, without you I’d be lost. To all our readers, thanks for continuing to visit the blog. And to those who add to the discussion every day, your comments are always welcome, read, and appreciated. No i tomorrow, so I’ll see you on the other side when no doubt heads won’t be quite as clear.

COD? Just for the nice and subtle definition, 26ac – “Like a dreadful fiend in awful tie (10)”.

To the ghost of Christmas past:

Yes – once that long one was solved (in my case just by spelling it out in the blank space of the advert below the grid and adding in the cross-checking letters there & seeing how soon it would become guessable, rather than attempting to parse the wordplay) the rest of it was helped along immeasurably. All very pleasant and smooth as usual for a Monday Quixote.

Happy Christmas everyone, bloggers and visitors 🙂

Finished in record time thanks to the carol. I realise I whinge on about tough puzzles but with there being no i tomorrow, I wouldn’t have complained about a tougher puzzle. Anyway, thanks to all bloggers and I hope everyone has a good Christmas and I will see you on the other side x

I amused myself by not writing in the long ‘un until everything else was done. Not a long lasting puzzle, but a well made one, and besides there’s Saturday’s set aside for emergencies.

    Seasons greetings to everyone. 🙂

A quiet five minutes and it was done. “Wave arms around” for “Conduct” always amuses me.
Happy Christmas one and all 😁

Having spent the morning dressed in a red suit with a stick-on beard, it was nice to have something a bit festive to accompany the sherry. Ho, ho ho, everybody!
