i Cryptic Crossword 2432 Anax

November 23, 2018

A typical Anax as far as obscurities and complicated wordplay, but it probably wasn’t as difficult as I thought it was going to be after reading 1ac. Fortunately Anax has given some clues that are on the easier side – notably 6ac, 1dn and 8dn – because for me 1ac, 10ac and 4dn were unknowns, and I didn’t think the clue for 4dn was in any way helpful.  2dn was gettable but the Writer’ = I’m seems a bit dubious. I am getting used to Hoy for cyclist but had to stare at the rest of 7dn long and hard before I got what was going on unlike 14ac and 17dn which I couldn’t parse at all and had to consult the Fifteensquared blog for some enlightenment. I am still unconvinced by 17dn and the Admits in 21ac also seems a bit rum. Of the clues that were more to my taste 12ac – no I didn’t fall into the trap and think we were looking for a song – 25ac made me smile and 19dn got a tick but COD:

I liked 25a to start on a positive but several clues were too “smart” for me to understand, particularly 5d, where does 17 come into it? Also why is mp fairly quiet? and 17d??? Heigh ho.

Bah. I eventually turned to wordfinders, and still didn’t quite finish. Having put in PEACOCK incorrectly for 19dn meant I was never going to get 26ac.

Superb throughout and for my money the best crossword in the i for a long time. Mind you, I like Anax, and mileages vary widely on that score. Bravo.

Mmm. That’s my longest ever i solve, with question marks scattered throughout at the close. I’m not convinced either it was time well spent. I usually avoid Anax when he appears elsewhere as we seem to operate on entirely different wavelengths. Never mind.

Far too irritating to be truly satisfying.

On the positive side I thought that LOWEST OF THE LOW was very good, as was BOTTOM.

On the other hand there were far too many clues I could not work out and had to guess or seek electronic help with, and too many obscure words – whether or not they were fairly clued – for a daily cryptic. W Even after looking on Fifteensquared there are several clues which still seem wrong. Was LIMEWATER ever a medicine?

As well as making the mistake of entering PEACOCK, I also put in SAPPHO, whilst wondering how to parse it. This held me up in the SE corner somewhat.

I suspect Anax is the sort of person who can’t see a name like Lowestoft without immediately coming up with a clue like 3d – brilliant!
But unfortunately my speed with a puzzle of this difficulty is so slow, and time today so short, that I turned to a wordfinder for the last several clues. Shame really, because I could see the quality… if only they’d give us the likes of Anax and Scorpion on Saturdays!

Oh and put me down as another who entered Peacock at 19d.
