i Cryptic Crossword 2420 Monk

November 9, 2018

Monk again. It was only two weeks ago that he last appeared and that went down like the proverbial lead balloon in some quarters, this must have influenced me as reading through the across clues, well they might as well have been written in Serbo – Croat for all the sense they made until, that is, 11ac. At last something I could answer. Subsequent progress wasn’t exactly rapid but could be best described as steady. The only complete obscurity for me was 15dn, but that was nicely clued so as to make it easily gettable. The Neb part of 8ac and the Kir in 6dn were the only other unknowns. Like RatkojaRiku over on Fifteensquared my LOI was 26ac and like him it was a toss up between Blunders and Clangers but the “angers” part clinched it for me.

This was probably on the easy side for this setter and despite my original misgivings proved an fairly rigorous but enjoyable solve with lots to admire, so picking one for COD is not easy, so I’ll go for the one that made me smile

Blow up bananas (4)

As this is Monk there is a little something going on in the grid. It’s to do with compass points and no I didn’t spot it.

Woo hoo! A write-in at 7ac, and we’re off to a flying start. After which, not a sausage for quite a while. It’s taken me a long time to develop the taste, but I now thoroughly enjoy locking horns with Monk and this went down very nicely, thank you.

Another write-in at 7ac, but in my case I went on to make pretty steady progress finishing in what was – for Monk at least – a pretty remarkable time. One or two I couldn’t parse – 8ac and 11ac notably so. Last in 8d. Golfers, eh?

I didn’t notice the “something extra”, funnily enough, but enjoyed this nevertheless. A nice end to the working week.

Ditto 7A, and after that a slow plod for me too. I chose BLUNDERS over CLANGERS, bring unable to parse either of them at the time. Did not know NESCIENT, but it was fairly clued and quite getable when the crossing letters were in. Not exactly enjoyable, but pleased that I finished it, albeit with the blunder of blunders…

Just thought I’d add that I’m saving the Dac for an evening treat. Just wish the answers had been printed on a different page…

Thanks for the warning about folding the Dac puzzle – maybe something for the weekend…

This was excellent in parts and ‘fine’ in others – a word I got pilloried for using earlier today when asked how I was. Apparently ‘interesting is also out, in some trendy circles…
Norman was similarly my LOI. My favourites were 2d and 9a.

I gave up half-finished and did the Dac instead. Much more enjoyable.

After a few write-ins I decided I really couldn’t care less. Haven’t had time to read the paper today so I am looking forward to having a tussle with Dac, for old times sake.
