i Cryptic Crossword 2392 Raich

October 8, 2018

Belated congratulations to Raich. For once I did spot the Nina, and before completing the puzzle as well, though it didn’t help to the south of the grid which was a little slower to fall than the rest. I say a little slower, this being pretty relative as this was a crossword that was over in a flash, and one I was surprised to find wasn’t an IoS reprint. No complaints, Raich’s puzzles are always lots of fun, and usually straightforward so it wasn’t a surprise to find that this one was too. There’s a little debate on the other side about both 16d and 26ac but both looked fine to me. Elsewhere all was understand, no controversies, just a good, solid, enjoyable start to the week.

COD? I’ll go with 12ac – “Emergency move up? (7)”.

Yes, I was surprised to see some of the solvers on the other side find problems with this one – I always imagine they’re much more experienced than us for some reason, and Raich’s 50th seemed about as straightforward as they come, even if the ‘by’ in 7a did seem awry.

I guess 7a was “impressed by” which was taken to mean “encompassed by” which is a bit of a stretch. Didn’t like “rest” for shelter either, but otherwise fine – plus I learned that screed could also mean a long-winded speech or document not having heard it used in that context before.

The same very minor quibble about rest for shelter from me, and I have to confess I barely bothered to parse Stand-in, as it seemed so obvious. A nice straightforward solve today, all done in less than 30 minutes, which is half what it normally takes me. I even spotted the Nina.

Oh well, I won’t mention that “shelter” then. Raich seems ideally suited to the Monday slot , and this one struck me as pitched just right and rather nicely polished too. With regard to “impressed” I took it as the “bashed over the bonce with a blackjack and brought aboard” definition, which made some sort of sense to me … but yes, it’s a stretch all right.

Enjoyed this, a nice start to the week it was just 26ac that seemed a complete clunker.
