i Cryptic Crossword 2389 Donk

October 4, 2018

Looking back through old posts it seems that, as suspected, I’ve got something of a hate-hate relationship going on with Donk, and I’m afraid today’s offering did little to change that. It’s a Saturday reprint, which are sometimes tough, but I’m afraid that for the most part today I felt like I was banging my head against a brick wall and not particularly enjoying the experience. Too many that didn’t work for me – 17d being a prime example. Too many that just weren’t to my taste – needing to abbreviate “with” to W for the anagram fodder in 10ac being another one. At the close I had a full grid and lots of question marks I didn’t really feel the need to follow up on. Oh well, perhaps this just isn’t my kind of thing, and you enjoyed it more.

COD? I’ll go with 1d – “Arrogant? Not Sitting Bull! (6)”.

Really couldn’t be bothered to finish this one! I dislike Donk’s style.

I tend to worry when I see a Donk puzzle, as I do find his style challenging. This took me a long time to get into, and a longer-than-usual 90 minutes to complete. But in the end this was very satisfying and gave me some sense if achievement.

I could not parse Hutch, the reference to the television copper completely passing me by. Stations as an indicator of an inclusion in 26A – Skint was new to me but sort of works. E for base in Franchisee was arcane, I thought, and I slander for puts down was iffy.

However, lots of positives, with special mentions to Sisterhood and Start-ups – and Uppish was brilliant, imho.

Top half seemed easier than the bottom where I had a lot of question marks. Thought both 22ac and 25ac clever but 4dn and 17dn didn’t really work for me.

It all seemed rather sixth form to me. Shame – Donk has entertained in the past, but this was trying way too hard for my tastes.

Feeling a bit bruised and battered after crawling my way through that lot especially the bottom half. I tend to do a few across lights and then start on the down clues in order to crosscheck as I go so I was in decent shape by the time I got to the bottom half and suddenly it was like wading through treacle. A few too many dodgy clues for my liking.

What Sprouthater and Wanerlust said. I did quite well in the top half, ticked a couple (1dn and 3dn I particularly liked), then ground to a halt in much of the bottom half and needed electronic help. And as some of you have already said, several of those went in on a “must be but don’t get how” basis. Really don’t think the wordplay works in 17dn at all.

I found that very, very painful… I’m not sure I’ve encountered Donk before. I’ll brace myself next time.

  8. Gave up and went to do something else…

Sorry to break ranks, but I thought that was terrific!
Packed with wit, invention and creativity. Took me ages, yes, but I loved every bit of it – with the possible exception of my last ones in – the intersecting 13d & 28a – but even they were not without merit.
However, I do think the 2014 positioning of this (and many other Thursday i puzzles) on a Saturday makes much more sense.
