i Cryptic Crossword 2382 Punk

September 26, 2018

So a slighter tougher challenge than we’re used to on a Wednesday, but one that was consistently entertaining, it being Punk. Getting 1ac at a first glance and then making fairly good progress in that corner of the grid raised hopes of a swiftish solve, but the RHS in particular took a fair bit of unpicking. Perhaps trying to solve with half an ear on a work call wasn’t the best approach. I didn’t know 4ac and needed a fair few checking letters to get her name – only one safe was ever going to fit, but there are a lot of gods to pick from. The parsing of several others – notably 17ac – eluded me, but no doubt that was down to lack of concentration. Or in the case of 19ac a steadfast refusal to acknowledge that it’s almost that time of year again. Finish time then above par for the i, but maybe not what I’d expect for Punk.

COD? For me it’s got to be the quite remarkably well hidden 24/8 – “Attacking force stopping tearaway Nero, one yielding (5,6)”.

A steady workout today with a mixture of some easy write-ins and some that needed a bit of work. I had no idea about Thang, but once I had got the crossing letters and Coathanger it was obvious what it should be. I had totally forgotten about Kim, and had been trying to parse Snippy for a while, before the penny dropped. Jaguar and Reneged made me smile, but Wayne Rooney, my last one in was splendid and a very satisfying end to an hour’s enjoyment.

That’s two of my favourite setters on the trot, meaning that tomorrow’s crossword will probably be a trial rather than a treat. No matter – I sailed through this with no real hold ups, smirking at all the things which will nettle the purists. Typically amusing and rather more accessible than the average Punk.

That was fun. Much more enjoyable than yesterday’s heavily themed offering IMO.

Challenging week for the i so far. Had the time on my hands to get 3/3 which I’m happy with. Totally agree with your choice of COD, definitely more relevant back when this puzzle was compiled tho.

I think Punk is my fav setter. Tough but fun.

Despite the answer at 19ac I really enjoyed this.

Inventive and thoroughly entertaining as per usual. Maybe we’re in for a welcome run of Punk puzzles…

Cripes. Glad you lot liked it. I gave up with less than half filled in.

I’m one who enjoyed it. I thought it was at the easier end of Punk’s spectrum of difficulty. But I didn’t know THANG (TX pronunciation of ‘thing’) although it was obvious after parsing COAT HANGER, and I only got the footballer from crossing letters – never spotted it was a hidden.
