i Cryptic Crossword 2326 Commoner

July 23, 2018

An IoS reprint to start the week, and a pretty straightforward one it was too. I think it was only 18d that gave me any problems right at the close, for reasons that elude me now. Lots went in on definition alone, and 21ac I’d argue was a little too clearly flagged, but there you go. Enjoyable while it lasted, and a good Monday puzzle.

COD? Let’s go with 22d – “Partial to unethical veal? Bring forth a baby cow! (5)”.

A collection of write-ins for the most part, but well executed and quite enjoyable while it lasted. Not terribly taken with 2d, but there you go.

So that’s half a dozen gentle puzzles on the trot (not counting the beast in The Times on Saturday), which leaves me wondering what on earth Eimi might have in store for me tomorrow. It’s too quiet – I don’t like it, Carruthers.

Mostly write-ins but I too found 2nd a bit dubious along with the “egg” part of 27ac and weren’t 9ac witches rather than goddesses?

Well it seems there were indeed some Wyrd sisters who were Norse goddesses (of destiny), but I’ve only seen the spelling used today in witchy circles…
Never mind though, I thought this was an excellent easy-end-of-the-quality-cryptics puzzle with 21a being my particular favourite.
