i Cryptic Crossword 2310 Alchemi

July 4, 2018

Alchemi today with an IoS reprint that was on the straightforward side as anticipated, though perhaps easier to solve than parse in places. Knowing that I could nip over to Fifteensquared afterwards I didn’t worry overly about the latter, and got on with the business of filling the grid. There’s a theme I failed miserably to spot, but then again baseball isn’t my thing. Well done if you did. The hidden word at 13ac took a while to spot, and I got a bit hung up in the SE corner where I was struggling a little with the wordplay for 21ac and 28ac, though as it turns out getting 21d alleviated the need to parse either. 🙂

Enjoyable throughout, anyway, despite my somewhat slapdash approach to solving. I particularly liked 17d, which gets my nomination for COD – “Cross setter, say, about to get pregnant (9)”.

To April 2014 for all the answers and parsing of the clues:

Almost a write in but a few I couldn’t parse it was just 30ac in the end that got a bit of a grimace.

  2. I agree. Easy to write in the answers, but less easy to work out why. And no, I didn’t spot the theme either.

A pitch perfect substitute for Dac, I thought, and very enjoyable if not the most demanding. Jolly good show, Alchemi. I know a lot less about American rounders than I did about Marvin Gaye prior to yesterday’s puzzle, so the theme comes as news to me.

    Seconded all the above 🙂

To ghost fully 13 themed words into a grid fill takes quite some doing; to do it in a standard grid without resorting to obscurities is doubly impressive. Wish I’d spotted it!
