i Cryptic Crossword 2291 Scorpion

June 12, 2018

Scorpion doesn’t tend to go in for stealth when embedding a theme, so with all those references to 18ac and a gateway clue which left the gate wide open it’s pretty obvious what’s going on from the outset. There are ten thematic entries, and the trouble with this approach is that a fair portion of the crossword does itself more or less automatically. A shame really, since some of those clues are rather nice, for example 5 and 28ac.

Very little to complain about today, although I didn’t care for the definition part of 14ac (no issue with the wordplay). Quite a few superior clues to enjoy as one would expect, of which 11 and 17 particularly appealed to me. They are pipped at the post by 18d, which is my Clue of the Day:

“Two types of tea available, when fellow moves inside this hovel? (7)”

An excellent write-up by Duncanshiell with all the solutions and parsing is available at Fifteensquared; the crossword first appeared in March 2014.

All good fun, and fairly easy for Scorpion. I knew most of the models referenced which made for a very quick grid fill once the theme became clear. As bemused as you were by the definition at 14ac, so much so that I was convinced I must have got it wrong. Lots of ticks, lots to enjoy. The COD was a good one, wasn’t it?

Slow start nothing went in until 18ac and then it all sort of fell in place. The definition at 18dn was new to me I thought it was a derogatory term for a woman, couldn’t parse 14ac or 28ac the latter of which I rate as awful. Lots to like though with my personal favourite being 26ac.

Very nice from Scorpion – somewhat gentler than we’re used to from him, although there was a bit of a sting in the tail (sorry) with the SE corner, with clues like the perfectly excellent 26a taking me longer than they should have.

And if you’re up for more, I’ve another of my occasional offerings over on the Indy website here: https://puzzles.independent.co.uk/games/cryptic-crossword-independent/#!201806 .
Be warned though, it seems to be going down as a tad harder than my average…

Cheers. I’ve now completely run out of ideas, and have no clue as to where any more will be coming from… might be a while!

Very enjoyable and clever that ā€“ thanks for the link Cornick. Not as hard as some of them seemed to think (half a day?? served my lunchtime nicely) ā€“ certainly more accessible (to me at least) than some of the i puzzles I’ve struggled with over recent weeks. šŸ™‚
