i Cryptic Crossword 2290 Commoner

June 11, 2018

Following on from a weekend when I was struggling to solve even the simplest puzzle, this was exactly the sort of confidence boost I needed. Nice and straightforward, well flagged definitions, clear wordplay, in other words a good IoS puzzle and a good one to schedule for a Monday morning when perhaps many solvers aren’t feeling their best. ๐Ÿ™‚ Nothing controversial I think, but fun throughout.

COD? Not a great deal leapt out, to be honest, so I’ll go with 8d which older solvers will have seen before, but is still a nice clue – “Old-fashioned, as Rupert Murdoch is? (6,3,5)”.

Agreed – all straightforward and pleasant enough and the COD was worth a smile ๐Ÿ™‚

Plain sailing. Although it’s not particularly controversial, perhaps it bears mentioning that the world is full of cads but bounders are a much rarer breed. Not the same thing.

I think that’s the fastest I’ve ever completed an i cryptic. No complaints tho. Easy is satisfying too. Well done commoner.

Started at the top, finished at the bottom, all perfectly enjoyable. Particularly liked the COD (new to me) and also the definition in 14a.

Just right for a sunny day when fence painting has been mandated.
I was unfamiliar with both 14ac and 23ac and rather hoped for something more controversial at 8dn.
