i Cryptic Crossword 2286 Dac

June 6, 2018

Blame the interruptions. I started off at a fair old lick in the NW corner, but then… Pressing information from home. Ok, deal with that. Cue urgent work messages to respond to… At which point my train of thought was completely thrown and it took a while to get back into things. A great big unknown across the centre of the grid at 14ac won’t have helped my state of mind, or the definition at 10ac which prompted a “what???” with the same number of question marks by the clue. Oh, I thought FOR PITY’S SAKE was an entirely reasonable answer too and didn’t bother to parse afterwards. On the other hand 22ac I got right but most definitely couldn’t parse. Not one of my finer days. I still staggered over the finish line in a time well under par for the i, so perhaps it wasn’t that bad after all. Next time I’ll remove myself to a dark corner and switch off the phone and the computer before solving.

COD? Lots to enjoy as always with Dac, with 11d getting an extra tick – “Vending machines are popular in store and highly thought-of on line? (4-8)”.

Not sure whether to be amused or appalled by that bit of Mummerset; definitely not keen on the chocolate or the Genet play. Otherwise fine and dandy. As for that philosopher, I shall remain silent. ๐Ÿ˜‰

As a resident of Somerset for the past 38 years I was appalled by 22ac, the whole clue was as distastefull as the drink itself is (well I don’t like it but my Granddaughter loves the stuff). I never start a crossword puzzle without a list of philosophers so this one wasn’t a problem unlike the play and the chocolate. It was 15dn that I hadn’t heard of before, yes I know there was a TV series of the same name but I didn’t watch it, presumed it was about pizzas ๐Ÿ™‚

Not really Dac at his best, but still a few good ‘uns in there – I liked 4a and 16d amongst others.
As an Somerset native I too winced at 22a, although that Genet play is well-known in the Cornick household. Talking of Maids, how is a tweeny an old one, I wonder?

Wasn’t in the right frame of mind this morning, so have tackled most of this over dinner this evening. Just finished – with 26ac LOI and a bit of a guess/assumption. 15 and 22 were certainly towards the end for me too. 10ac was certainly a “???” here.
