i Cryptic Crossword 2264 Morph

May 11, 2018

We finish the working week with an excellent puzzle from Morph that was originally in a Monday edition of the Independent which may explain why it is on the easy side for this setter. As is usual there is some low level ribaldry and smut to make this solver smile, a few nice anagrams to get started with and some, 7dn, 18, 20, and 23ac primarily that were only parsed after I had written them down and stared at them for some time, all of them excellent.  Do people still Twerk? I doubt it but it was probably quite popular back in 2014, fortunately I knew the band in 24ac but they may be a bit of an unknown to some solvers which brings me to 3dn my LOI and to me the only real obscurity in the whole puzzle.

With lots to like here picking one is quite difficult but with apologies to Jonofwales

COD  4dn    Good-for-nothing drunken Welsh sort  (9)

Yes that was something of a pleasant relief after the struggles I’ve had with this week’s earlier puzzles. Perhaps the slightly racier style identifies my level…
24ac did raise a smile (and I shared that one with a musician colleague). For me the LOI, simply for understanding WHY it was what it had to be, was 23ac.
Some very nice clues in there. 4ac and 8dn were distinctly nod-worthy.

Yes, I thought that was excellent. One I two I didn’t entirely follow, the twerk reference among them, but in that case the minute I saw that definition, and the last letter, it was a write-in. I’m afraid yesterday’s Nestor just got pushed into second place in my weekly rankings. 🙂

I like a week that finishes with Nestor and Morph. Lots to relish in there, proving once again that a puzzle doesn’t have to be fiendish to be excellent.

    Welcome back, Sprouters. 🙂

Well, that was a surprise – it was so good that I’m not convinced that Morph didn’t pip Nestor at the finishing post for puzzle of the week. 15d did prompt a spot of musing since unless I’m mistaken the usual total of prongs for one of those is two: is that multi? Come to that, I’m having a hard time thinking of anything with just a single prong. Anyway, baffling trivia aside, a most unimpeachable crossword.

  6. I did enjoy this. My last one in was 10a. Couldn’t see how enrobe = make investment…

Apparently it can be used as a ceremonial term for adorning with the robes of office – like the Investiture of the Prince of Wales.
