i Cryptic Crossword 2254 Raich

April 30, 2018

An IoS reprint to start the working week as expected, and Raich whose name is always a guarantee of an enjoyable puzzle. In common with the original bloggger and others back in the day I found this to be a bit trickier than expected, finish time a little above par for the i perhaps. I wasn’t tricked by the “North American playwright”, but unfortunately didn’t know the playwright or the North American so resorted to the dictionary. One or two others I couldn’t parse, though I suspect if I’d taken the trouble I could have with all. It’s too easy to pop over to Fifteensquared instead! But all in all an enjoyable start to the week.

COD? The slightly unusual 21d – “Needing order? Yes, sergeant-major! (5)”.

To December 2013 once more:

I thought the style was a bit more oblique than usual for Raich, and a couple of the clues verged on the “experimental”. Had a nagging feeling that there was something more than met the eye going on, but if there was it hasn’t become apparent to me. Enjoyable crossword, anyway.

Enjoyable again from Raich. And my stumbling block was the venial sin clue, which I didn’t realise meant a sin of the easily forgiven variety – a bit like not knowing your Native American tribes 😉
