i Cryptic Crossword 2252 Hieroglyph

April 27, 2018

This was Hieroglyph’s debut in the Independent all those years ago, and I’m guessing his debut in the i too unless my memory’s failing me again. My first guess on solving was that this would turn out to be an IoS reprint, such was the speed the clues were falling, but as it turns out it was a Saturday Prize Puzzle. At first I thought – blimey, I’ve finally got the hang of this crosswording lark – but it turns out everyone else found it on the easy side too. Oh well. That said I slowed down significantly in the NW corner, even with the generous BOND STREET in place, which I suspect might just have been me running out of steam.

There’s a pretty clearly flagged theme based around various 24ac’s, all of which I knew, including the works referenced, given how well known they are. Only the one I couldn’t parse – 25d, not knowing Robespierre’s full name (who does?), but the rest went in confidentally enough.

All in all an enjoyable solve, after which I’m looking forward to the next from Hieroglyph.

COD? A difficult choice today, as while all the clues were good and solid, there’s nothing really flashy that might jump out, but I’ll go with 3d – “Beauty queen’s missing small-minded characteristic”.

To December 2013:

And why am I posting on a Friday? Sprouthater’s on his holidays, so you’re stuck with me for a few weeks. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hieroglyph is very welcome, if this puzzle is representative: a winning combination of Monday-ish difficulty and a theme which didn’t lead to excessive complications. I have a few quibbles but it would be churlish to rehearse them since there was nothing to stymie the solver. Highly entertaining overall. I did know Robespierre’s full name, but had to ransack the mental archives for it – rather a clever little clue, that ‘un.

For a debut puzzle, that had a confident swagger about it – pleasing themed clues, jolly surfaces and I could only quibble about the heavy reliance on anagrams – 12 of the lights indeed.
It seems Hieroglyph did 23 puzzles for the Indy before stopping suddenly about 18 months ago.

I failed at the end on 25dn, but everything else before that was pleasant enough ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Really enjoyed this. Just my level of difficulty. Took a while to realise that the writer of 10/16 wasn’t the same one as 15/22!
