i Cryptic Crossword 2209 Poins

March 8, 2018

This was evidently going to be an IoS reprint which meant that it was on the straightforward side, as expected. As Pierre noted back in the day some of the wordplay is a little intricate, but to be honest for the most part I’m guessing many solvers won’t have needed it. With enough crossing letters, a well flagged definition, and maybe a hint of the cryptic (the ‘B’ in 1ac for example), you were away. One less well known answer at 23ac, but it was either going to be LEDA or LADA, and Google to the rescue. A pretty nippy solve then, and an enjoyable one too.

COD? Not a great deal leapt out, really, but 11ac is quite elegantly done – “Flyer makes border in record time (8)”.

Back to the dark days of 2013 for all the parsing and more:

I was fine with Leda but didn’t think much of 11ac (the NW corner generally was my last area to fill).

Completely flummoxed by 10ac, a port that wasn’t Aden or Rio outrageous 😀. 14dn was the only one that I couldn’t parse but with a few crossers in the definition was obvious.

NW corner last to fall here too. A good puzzle with a smattering of quite hard general knowledge, but nothing you could really call obscure.
Having been ravaged by Zeus, Leda begat Helen, later of Troy, don’t you know.

Enjoyed that, more interesting than expected. I liked 11ac too, which had an element of the unexpected to it.

  5. New word of the day: a favourite haunt of Apollo and The Muses.
