i Cryptic Crossword 2207 Raich

March 6, 2018

Raich’s previous Tuesday puzzles have included Abba and Roy Orbison themes, and here we have another in a similar pop cultural vein. I confess that I am not a fan of 1 and 16, but it would be difficult to miss what’s going on – or so you’d think. Some of the Fifteensquared regulars were understandably too busy looking for a peripheral Nina, so there were one or two slapped foreheads back in October 2013 when the blog appeared.

Funny old grid, isn’t it? Far easier to solve than to compile one imagines; in fact with a one exception the entries amounted to a succession of Monday level write-ins. 3d, however, was a strange one and I’m not altogether sure that it’s a very good clue. Ahem. 13d is a peculiar word, easily deduced by anyone with a bit of German to their name, but others will have had to trust their instincts. Otherwise, no obscurities and indeed not a great deal to remark. It seemed for a while that finding a worthy clue of the day would be a problem, but happily there’s 23ac, which is a knockout.

Most of this was indeed a write-in, but I came a little unstuck at the close on not only 3d, but 1d, 24d and 23ac. If only I’d spotted the theme sooner. Given 7 / 10 / 14 in plain sight there’s no excuse really. 🙂

I actually spotted a theme😁 I printed a good many of the cassette inlay cards for 7, 10, 14 and the company where I was working got a gold disc for it. Only 3dn, which was solved in the same way as alan_c describes on the other side, giving any sort of problem. 24dn seems to me to grammatically wrong.

Seems odd, but it’s an unusual word inasmuch as it can be past tense or past participle, but also a transitive verb in its own right. The latter is relatively uncommon nowadays, but it seems fair enough in the clue. Wonder why he didn’t choose to go for “Restricted upward jump”?

I would maybe guess that he was trying to create a picture or tell a mini story, if you will. Attempts at such often fall short of being compelling, but at least we can give Raich credit for trying!

I enjoyed that. Guessed the theme ridiculously early on as two of my first three answers were 7a and 10a, which helped speed things considerably.
Similarly perplexed by parsing for 3d, but maybe should have spent longer thinking of different possibilities for Crucible.
And the COD was a winner by 20 lengths – very nice.

  4. I enjoyed this. 🙂
