i Cryptic Crossword 2196 Dac

February 21, 2018

A little on the challenging side today for Dac I thought. When I’d gone through all the across clues without an inkling as to how to solve any I guessed that I might be in trouble, and my first one in, 7d, did little to help matters, because it was really in the SE that I began to make progress. A few odd words in the NE perhaps didn’t help – EQUIPE and ALEVIN – though both were very clearly clued and perhaps on another day I would have got them without needing checking letters. A little German required for 2d if you couldn’t remember the driver – though thankfully I could, as it’s not in Chambers and I would have been a little stuck otherwise. A few question marks at the close, all of which are ably cleared up over on the other side.

A substantial number of ticks too as ever on a Wednesday, with COD going to 17d – “Could this be viewed as a ‘female’ film? (4,3)”.

To October 2013 once more:

Yes, that COD was a gem. Lots of lovely clues as per usual, indeed.
I once clued 18a as ‘Shopper’s item for carrying booze outside’. Plagiarism or what!

Start was similar but I did get 9 and 23 fortunately the down clues fell more readily. My particular favourites being 12ac and 23ac with a grimace next to 15ac.

A corker. Similarly hopeless start with the acrosses, but the downs fell much more readily and things progressed in a respectable manner thereafter. Splendid clues throughout, and as for 15ac, you wait a lifetime for one to turn up, then you get two in a week …

  4. New word of the day: a young salmon.
