i Cryptic Crossword 2178 Dac

January 31, 2018

What can you say? Another enjoyable, accessible puzzle from Dac. I started at a gallop in the NW corner and filled maybe three quarters of the grid pretty quickly, but the rest took as long again. Perhaps it was deciding that the pudding was the definition bit in 22d, or confidently (mis)spelling the African lake as per an old Doctor Who companion that could be derived from the same anagram fodder, or the number of very well disguised definitions throughout. Talking of which, 15ac was rather sneaky… I would blame the error in the enumeration at 11/12, but because I spotted it straight away I can’t. Overall time anyway under par for the i, and about par for Dac.

COD? My last in, and if only because it took an age to work out which bits were the definition and which the wordplay, 7d – “Film director missing start of sad Spielberg movie (5)”.

Yes, all very good. Del Shannon not being my thing any more than One Direction, there was a certain amount of informed guesswork. On the other hand 26ac is a very familiar name to me, but one suspects that perhaps his star burns a lot less brightly for younger solvers, who may very well be thinking “who he”?

Interesting to see Dac doing a symmetrical thing with four paired lights – nice! And I see the enumeration on 11a still hasn’t been tidied up – tssk!
And as for ‘General’ knowledge – what’s that? I have no idea frankly. Dac tends to play safe (compared to Tyrus yesterday, say) so I think I’d forgive him a bit of 70s nostalgia.
Then re the 4/5d solution, surely it refers to Yazz rather than the 1D film, no?

I’d assumed it referred to Yazz, but then again that’s more my era than 1D.

Apologies to John over at 225, I think I mistook his intention – he was probably referring to the Yazz song all along, with the film thing just being a bit of ‘added extra’. Like I say, not my week!

Sped through the top half but took ages on the rest, getting the pudding was a bit of a breakthrough.

I found it a blessed relief after several days that were testing my competence, to get one that was a relatively smooth solve (despite the enumeration boo-boo). I didn’t know the Del Shannon hit, but once a few letters were in it was ‘assumable’. Re 4/5: Yazz was my assumption too; until arriving here I did not know of 1D having released a film at all, let alone one with that title.
