i Cryptic Crossword 2167 Tees

January 18, 2018

It’s Tees, a setter I often struggle with, and a Thursday reprint to boot, so I wasn’t surprised to record a pretty sluggish time. A pretty easy 1ac led to hopes of a quick solve, but it wasn’t to be. In common with many I suspect I googled Starkfield and was immediately presented with the answer to 10ac, and struggled with obscurities elsewhere. The definition at 9ac, UNCO for strange at 5d, and the cricketing term at 17ac being the chief suspects. There were bits I liked, but as a whole the puzzle didn’t really appeal to me I’m afraid. Probably more to do with me than anything else, as I’ve never really got on with this setter’s puzzles. Your mileage may vary! šŸ™‚

Same here ā€“ including the Starkfield googling. 17ac was one of those “well, it must be, but I can’t see why” ones. 9ac was last in.

Never heard of Starkfield or the book (or the Pulitzer Prize winning author!) but I had a stab at a name from the fodder and a couple of crossers, and so it proved.
Loved 8d which came very near the end. Several other good ‘uns. Overall pretty tricky though, and I failed on 9a.
Agreed on COD, which must have read even better back in 2013.

Much the same as JofW although I failed on 3d. It became a bit of a chore. Ticks for 4/14, 8dn and 16dn but a snort of derision for 17ac.

Very, very good I thought, but he did overstep the mark rather with 5 and 9 for my money. A scrupulously fair puzzle by its own lights, however. Happy enough with 17 (eventually), and 10ac was a known quantity. The one which put a smile on my face was the repeater.

  5. Gave up on this one. 10 – 4.
