i Cryptic Crossword 2166 Dac

January 17, 2018

I’m standing in for Jonofwales today and as expected get a thoroughly enjoyable puzzle from Dac. I can do little more than direct you to the original blog where the introduction sums this up perfectly “What can one say? As we get on most Wednesdays, a perfectly-formed creation. The structure of the clues is always deceptively simple, which leaves little room for argument.”  The only bone of contention is regarding 14dn which probably doesn’t quite parse properly but the answer was plain enough, I had more trouble parsing 13ac and 16ac. Too many ticks to mention them all but 1ac got a couple and made me smile but-

COD   20ac      Word for short, tight-fisted type (7)

My thoughts entirely. Seems that the problem with 14d lies with the editor rather than the setter.

Yes, if the “er” is supposed to be part of “Warmer” (instead of part of “Ger” following the “Warm”), then it needs a container-contents indicator that it hasn’t got.

Slightly odd feeling to have 4ac the same as yesterday’s 3dn (and quite a similar clue, IIRC)

Same here, with plenty of ticks, an ! by 4a, and a ? by 14d – although a ‘oner’ is what we used to call a conker which had yet to win a conker fight (they may still do so) so it sort of makes sense by accident.

    Thanks for covering today. 🙂

Perhaps I’m just tired, but I struggled with a few at the close – 10d, 12ac and 13ac. I vaguely noticed that something was amiss with 14d, but didn’t look into the wordplay much beyond WARMER and G.

Lots to enjoy as ever from Dac, I particularly liked 26ac,

  5. 1a was my favourite. I also had fun finding out who Pierre Vernier was. 10 – 3
